Three days on foot around Nordfjordeid and Lote. One night in a birdbox cabin 270 metres above the fjord, and a sauna as your reward. The hikes are close together – and you walk at your own pace.
A three-day hiking itinerary in Nordfjordeid and Lote, made for couples and groups of friends. Three hikes at different levels: Trollenykjen at 898 metres, Naustdalskamben at 474 metres and Trolledalsegg above Lotsberg at 1130 metres. Between the hikes you have a sauna by the fjord, a hotel with pool and spa, and Sagastad with the Myklebust ship.
The first night you sleep in a birdbox cabin at Skaara Living, 270 metres above the fjord. The next two nights you stay at Nordfjord Hotell in Nordfjordeid, with sauna and restaurants within walking distance.
The hikes differ in length and steepness. Compare height and time, and choose the one that suits how you feel that day – not the one listed first.
Take it easy on the first day. See the Myklebust ship in Nordfjordeid, and buy food for the evening. Drive up to Lotsberg before sunset. There you have the fjord 270 metres below you, and the evening on the terrace.
Sagastad is by the fjord in Nordfjordeid. Here you find the Myklebust ship, 30 metres long. It is a reconstruction: the original was the largest Viking ship we know of in Norway, but it was burned at the chieftain’s funeral. A visit here is a good start to the trip.
Two birdbox cabins stand at Lotsberg, 270 metres above the fjord. Both have a double bed and large windows facing the fjord. Here the stay is the experience itself: you sleep high above the fjord, with the view right from your bed. The next day’s hike starts on the same road.
Hike Naustdalskamben on the day you arrive, and use the discount at Nordfjord Hotell SPA for a shower before you drive up to Lotsberg. Then you fit all three hikes into three days.
Buy food on the way and enjoy the evening in the birdbox cabin right away. The view is there whenever you arrive.
Drive from the birdbox cabin up the mountain road to Lotsstøylen. From there you walk up the gravel road to Trolledalsegg. Then back down to Nordfjordeid, a sauna and a night at Nordfjord Hotell.
Lotsstøylen is a mountain farm at about 430 metres, and you can drive there. From the farm, a gravel road continues up to Trolledalsegg at 1130 metres. The road is even and easy to walk, but steep. From the top you see Hornindalsvatnet, the deepest lake in Europe at 514 metres. You also see Eidfjorden and Gloppefjorden, both arms of the Nordfjord.
The mountain farm is at 430 metres and has a view over the Nordfjord. Animals still graze here in summer. You can drive all the way, or leave the car below and walk up the mountain road.
Down from the mountain and straight into the sauna. Badestova is in Sjøgata in the centre of Nordfjordeid, and a dip in the fjord is part of the experience – the fjord is right outside the door. Open all year. Book online before you walk up to Trolledalsegg.
Nordfjord Hotell SPA has a pool, an outdoor jacuzzi, a steam room and an infrared sauna. The spa is at the hotel.
The hotel is in the middle of the village. It has its own restaurant, bar, pool and sauna. In the spa you can book massages and treatments. You stay here on nights two and three.
The last hike starts in Nordfjordeid. Trollenykjen is steep and takes about three hours. Naustdalskamben is easy and takes about one hour up. Both have views over the village and the fjord. You stay at Nordfjord Hotell this night too.
The hike starts at Skipenesbrua bridge down in the village. From there you walk 3.2 kilometres and 881 metres up to the summit. The trail is well marked. The first part follows a tractor road, then it is steep all the way to the top. From the summit you have a panoramic view of Nordfjordeid, the fjord and Hornindalsvatnet. You also see Trolledalsegg, where you hiked the day before.
If you do not want 881 metres of climbing on the last day, this is your hike. The day-trip cabin is at 474 metres, with a view down to Nordfjordeid and out over the fjord. The hike takes between 45 minutes and one and a half hours, depending on which route you take up.
From Nordfjordeid it is a short drive to the rest of Nordfjord. Explore the other areas by clicking the place names.
